Two Public School Administrators Take Cupcakes Out of Classroom and Into Business
Ellicott City, MD November 2011—Cooks ‘N Cakes is opening its cupcakery and catering company at 9251 Baltimore National Pike just in time for the holidays, bringing a unique boutique bakery to Howard County. This deliciously delirious concoction of two public elementary school administrators from the Washington, D.C. school district takes their love of cupcakes out of the classroom and into a business they believe has history on its side.
Master cupcaker Adell Cothorne brings culinary expertise to the kitchen of Cooks ‘N Cakes, having an affinity for baking dating back to her own elementary school days. “I remember baking with my mom all the time. She’d even wake me up at 2:00 in the morning to bake a butter pound cake.” She says her mother loves sweets so much that she advocates eating a banana split for breakfast every now and then—seriously!
With a longing for the days when cupcakes were admired for how well they tasted and not how tall they stood in embellishment, Corthorne focuses her talents on creating unforgettable taste sensations. Her greatest compliment: “I can still taste that cupcake you made last year. I can literally close my eyes and recall the buttery frosting and delicate, moist cake.” The acquaintance was referring to one of Cothorne’s signature flavors, Butter Me Up (vanilla butter cupcake with butterscotch buttercream and chopped pecans).
Cothorne’s culinary inspirations evolve from well-researched recipes that she makes her own, as well as flavors that conjure happy memories—like a recent trip to Jamaica with her husband when she ate the best mangos she ever had. This taste memory gave rise to “Jamaica Me Happy,” a mango cupcake with raspberry mango buttercream.
One bite of Cothorne’s cupcakes and colleague Bill Kerlina became her business partner, and agreed to manage operations and, of course, serve as official taste tester. It’s a bold move for the two educators who left their administrative positions in the D.C. school district this summer to start a new career and business in this challenging economy.
But cupcakes are not a flash in the pan, and they’re not a recent culinary phenomenon. First mentioned in cookbooks in the late 1700s, cupcakes’ longevity lies in their ability—when baked just right—to create taste memories. It is with this in mind that the menu at Cooks ‘N Cakes presents flavorful blends of the freshest ingredients in handmade original recipes from scratch that exemplify why the cupcake is America’s favorite treat.
In addition to making an everyday moment extraordinary, Cooks ‘N Cakes cupcakes are the perfect personal luxury desserts to sweeten a business meeting or corporate affair; celebrate a bride, baby or birthday; entertain a fundraiser, club or mixer; and delight a reunion of family and friends. Cothorne also creates custom cakes for any special occasion.
Dispelling the grumblings of cynics who say cupcakes are a dime a dozen, is Cooks ‘N Cakes “two-touch” promise that no more than two hands bring a cupcake from batter to frosting, making each one a singular sensation! When possible, Corthorne and Kerlina will use local resources like dairy products from South Mountain Creamery in Middletown, Maryland.
Besides her signature flavors including vanilla butter cakes with a variety of tasty frostings, Corthorne developed a series of cocktail-infused “Happy Hour” cupcakes like Sex on the Beach (peach cake laced with vodka, topped with creme de cassis buttercream), Mojito (minty cake with a hint of white rum, topped with lime buttercream), Bailey’s Irish Cream (chocolate cake topped with buttercream frosting, both laced with Bailey’s), and Champagne (sweet champagne cake, topped with champagne buttercream). For man’s best friend, she also created natural homemade cupcake-shaped dog treats, PupCakes™.
With a combined 32 years in education, Cothorne and Kerlina have learned first hand that “happiness is a warm cupcake” and the things that make us feel good are made with great love and care.
Construction at the cupcakery in Ellicott City is nearly complete, with Cooks ‘N Cakes’ grand opening just around the corner. To find out more, call 410-480-2253 or visit www.cooksncakes.com.
Cooks ‘N Cakes Has Gone to the Dogs!
New Howard County cupcakery launches PupCakes™ canine treats
Ellicott City, MD November 2011—The next evolution of the cupcake craze has gone to the dogs, as newcomer Cooks ‘N Cakes cupcakery and catering company launches its own recipe of natural, homemade cupcake-shaped dog treats for man’s best friend.
Called PupCakes™, these tasty canine snacks are made with the freshest ingredients including whole wheat, rolled oats, cornmeal, and cheddar cheese in three flavors—chicken, beef and bacon.
Connoisseurs know the personal eating affair cupcakes provide, something their canine companions can drool over in PupCakes™. Next to human family and friends, dog owners shower their puppy pals with treats to the tune of billions of dollars a year. But in a sea of mass produced snacks, PupCakes™ are made from scratch like you would do for your dog if you had the time.
The ideal reward for your “BF”, PupCakes™ reflect the same investment in taste perfection that Cooks ‘N Cakes makes in its original recipe signature cupcakes for humans. Packs of two PupCakes™ — one frosted, one plain — are on the menu, so everyone in the family can enjoy dessert. Although PupCakes™ have a shelf life of at least two weeks, they’re not likely to stick around that long!
Cooks ‘N Cakes is the partnership of two public elementary school administrators from the Washington, D.C. school district—Adell Cothorne and Bill Kerlina—who took their love of cupcakes out of the classroom and into a business that delivers homemade personal luxury dessert.
